OPEN ROLE CLASS: The most popular class in the school, here one learns in a fun and inspiring environment. Through games, exercises and play basic figures as well as advanced material is taught. Figures are broken down into parts and explored as adornments and embellishments are added. Don't miss this class which is always a blast and loved by everyone who takes it!

“Welcome to my living room”
Start the festival dancing tango in an elegant and friendly environment in the South Street Seaport area. Socialize and meet the locals, at the time you enjoy tapas, wine and dance tango. You don’t know how to Tango?. We have an all level class 6pm!

At this week's lesson we will be learning fun moves from Antonio Todaro.

Cocktail Reception Party at ALPHA

Come enjoy a cocktail reception part at the elegant Alpha Restaurant in Chelsea. This is the perfect way to commence the festival with a relaxed get together of the teachers, performers and other participants of the festival. There will be music, drinks, dancing and all around fun.

Let's go back in time to Buenos Aires, at the beginning of the century and recreate the glamour and elegance of that time, dancing tango with live music, singer and performances at the amazing and luxurious Player’s club.

TOTALLY BEGINNERS TANGO CRASH COURSE

Get Ready to jump on the dance floor!

This is 3 hours course where you will learn all the basic fundamentals, elements, musicality and common structures. This is the basic “vocabulary of tango” needed to be able to go out and dance quickly. Topics such posture, embrace, couple connection, walking, navigation, dance etiquette, musicality and change of dynamics described in our PEMC system, and all the basic combinations of them will be taught in this course. Our instructors will give a lot of individual attention to make sure you will get good foundations before you go to the next level.

 

Beginners “A”: Fundamentals and structures like “la baldosa, “paso basico”, “hamaca”, “calesita”, dance etiquette and navigation on the floor

 

Beginners “B”: Back and forward “ochos”, “paradas”, “arrastres”, “ganchos”, “boleos”, dance etiquette and navigation on the floor.

TANGO AL REVES: Learn the fun and fascinating style of tango done completely in shadow position. Anton will show you many ways to enter into the position, do a few figures and return to the original position so that your dancing is smooth and effortless.

MILONGA: is the faster, happier predecessor of tango. Danced with one step per beat this dance is lively and upbeat. You will lean the most basic steps as well as empujaditas (small pushes), cruzadas (crosses), and firuletes (adornments).

VALS Criollo or tango waltz is a beautiful dance done to 3/4 music. In this class you will learn all the basics of the dance including turns, boleos, calesitas and sacadas.

 

GIROS Y GANCHOS - La Vikinga:  Learn from this master teacher who will teach you how to turn properly in tango. Exercises will be given on how to stay connected to the partner and maintain a good distance. ganchos (leg hooks) will also be explored in all their different forms.

 

CLOSE EMBRACE - Lexa: In this class for all levels one learns the how to dance tango in a close embrace which is a popular style these days. Lexa, a known master of the style will instruct you on how to maintain balance, keep contact with the partner and never lose the connection in the chest.

  

ALL KIND OF DRAGS - Walter: Master teacher Walter Perez takes you through a journey exploring all the different types of leg drags of which there are many in Argentine Tango. Drags forward, back, side, left, right, up, down, around. They will all be explored.

 

BOLEOS: Claudio Romina: In this class by master teachers and stars of Forever Tango and Tango x 2, Claudio and Romina will teach the secrets to fast and sharp boleos. You will learn from all their tips and tricks of how to lead and follow boleos properly.

 

SACADAS: Claudio Romina: Sacadas are displacements of the legs by one partner to the other. A sacada can look strong and powerful but is in reality soft and gentle. In this advanced class all types of sacadas will be covered. The proper technique of how to execute them will be explained as well as how to lead and follow them properly.

QUEER DANCES NIGHT.

Show, classes & Dance

We start the night with a beginner and intermediate tango class, followed by a Tango line dancing class. Then we will enjoy an amazing show with the very best dancers in the same-sex dance world. Couples and group numbers with Argentine Tango, hustle, salsa, Latin and more this show has it all from sexy dances to comic ones. With dazzling choreography and costumes and singers this show will blow you away!

After the show, stay to dance and mingle with other dancers. All kind of dancers are welcome. All rhythms will be played by the renowned DJ Ilene. A Lot of surprises along the night.

PRACTICAS ALL ABOUT EMBRACE - Marc, and Lucas de Buenos Aires: In this class, you will learn the importance of the embrace in Argentine Tango. It is through this that the couple connects in the dance. Different types of embrace will be explored including close and open embrace.

SAME SEX TANGO

History video presentation by Anton Gazenbeek

Lecture - come discover the long and fascinating history of same-sex tango dancing. From the men's practices of the 1940s in Buenos Aires to the competitive dances of today you will see rare video clips and photographs from the Tango Preservation Project collection, illustrating this rich history. Don't miss it!

Come and learn the secrets to what goes into building a same-sex tango commnity. On our panel are a number of pioneers in the community who will discuss their stories and advices on how to build a successful community.

CLOSING MILONGA

What better way to close the festival than with live music by Los Chantas. This highly popular group will delight you with their beautiful interpretations of traditional tangos, milongas and valses. Performances by all the festival masters.

Held at the comfortable Red Bean Studios, snacks and wine will be provided.

FREE INTRO TANGO CLASS

In this 45 minute class you will learn the basic tango step, proper posture, dance position an embrace and couple coordination. It is perfect for those who have never danced tango before and want to get started learning this beautiful and passionate dance.

FREE ART EXHIBIT AND VENDOR TABLES

Some of the best local artists will be presenting their work on same-sex dance images. Paintings, drawings, sculptures and more will be displayed. In addition there will be a number of vendors and associations with tables open for the public to come see.

MILONGA LINE DANCING: In this super fun class you will learn solo moves to milonga music. the idea is for everyone to dance as a group. Taps, Boleos, Cruzadas, Picos, and slides are all included.
